Indian and Nepali food in Berlin

Plentiful and cheap, but read the sign carefully — many 'Indian' kitchens here are not.

The scene in Berlin

Berlin has a lot of Indian restaurants and a specific quirk: a large share are run by Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Nepali owners cooking a generalised North Indian menu adapted to German taste, often heavily sweetened and very mild by default. There is genuinely good food here, but it takes more filtering than in London or New York.

How it got here

South Asian migration to Germany was smaller and later than to Britain, and much of Berlin's restaurant trade grew from the 1990s onward rather than from a large settled community. That is why the food adapted so far towards local expectations — there was less of a home audience holding it in place. Nepali migration has since added a distinct layer, and momo are now easy to find.

What to expect

Ask for the heat you actually want and expect it to still arrive mild. Portions are large and prices low by Western European standards. Lunch specials are common and good value. The distinction between a tourist-facing kitchen and a serious one is wider here than in most cities on this list, so reviews are worth reading before committing.

Where to eat

  • KreuzbergThe densest and most varied stretch, and where the better Nepali kitchens cluster.
  • NeuköllnCheaper and less polished, with a strong late-night trade.
  • CharlottenburgOlder, more settled restaurants aimed at a West Berlin clientele.
  • Prenzlauer BergMore expensive and more adapted to local taste; good for a sit-down meal, less so for authenticity.

Practical notes

Kreuzberg and Neukölln have the densest and most varied options. Many places do not take reservations and turn tables quickly. Cash is still widely preferred in smaller restaurants. If a menu lists both Indian and Nepali sections, the Nepali one is usually what the kitchen cooks best.
